![]() ![]() I also liked the little side stories and how each of the likeable characters got some background. It's kind of tradition that those games continue when you think they are over, but in this one they really went overboard in a good way. Of course it's nothing groundbreaking and a few of the twists are pretty obvious, but there were some parts that really surprised me and the game really tricks you in how long the story goes. DQ VIII on PS2 sounded so much better with it's orchestrated soundtrack :/ Story was actually really good. I liked some tracks, but due to the midi quality they couldn't really amaze me. Soundtrack was okay, the typical tunes still worked, most of the new stuff was eh. Of course artstyle is subjective, I personally love it, others don't, but you really can't deny how great the cities or general areas look. I will update my review once played chapter 3, and potentially platinum pending on how much work to get to said platinumġ11h PlayedFirst of all the game really looks gorgeous. Music and sounds are also old school, which at times is nice but like all RPGs could do with a bit of a mixup when you go into battle, rather than that same repetitive jingle over and over! Overall great game that will take you a long time just to complete what I assume to be two thirds of the main game (chapters 1 and 2). As per above the story for chapters 1/2 is not the most original, though it does have some nice twists and tells the story in such a great way, really focusing on each individual characters back story in the process. Only issue with the game play, there are two setting easy or nightmare, I would recommend playing on the easier option and not grinding unless absolute necessary to up the challenge a tad. Although you can choose to set your characters to automatic, playing the game set entirely to manual character choices is like a 90s dungeon crawler and the best way to go. Off the bat the old school gameplay is such a breath of fresh air in a weird retro type of way. 55h 22m PlayedReview based on chapters 1 and 2 - chapter 3 to be completed Despite its complete lack of originality, this is prob one of the best JRPGs I have ever played, second only to the FF games of the 90s/ early 00s. ![]()
